Chris Cornell took the melody from U2’s “One” and mashed it up with the lyrics from Metallica’s “One.” The result is nothing short of awesome.
This article started out as “Who Did The Best Cover Of U2’s ‘One’?” I quickly realized that, A, there is not as much nuance and variation in those covers as I thought there would be. And, B, it wasn’t even a contest. The best version was by far Chris Cornell’s.
Who is Chris Cornell?
R.I.P. Chris Cornell. No really, like fucking R.I.P. Chris Cornell. If there was ever a great musician that deserved mounds more respect and adoration for his talents from the musical community it was this guy. A creative genius with voice like no other.
Cornell came up in the Seattle grunge scene of the early 90’s, fronting the band Soundgarden. After the breakup of Soundgarden he joined up with a few members of Rage Against the Machine and fronted a new band with them, Audioslave. Both Soundgarden and Audioslave are considered two of the best rock groups of their eras. Take a listen to a song by each.

“Like a Stone” was Audioslave’s most successful single. It reached number one on Billboard’s US Alternative Songs chart and Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart.
Sadly, Chris Cornell passed away in 2017. His death was ruled as suicide by hanging.
U2’s “One”
“One,” off of U2’s 1991 album Achtung Baby is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most lasting modern rock songs of all-time, as well as one of U2’s best. The song ranks 36th on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs of all-time.

Metallica’s “One”
This is a song that’s gotten stuck in my head for at least once a month since the day I heard it so many years ago.
Metallica’s “One” is a song off their fourth studio album, And Justice for All. Although the song was released before Metallica found widespread success, it lasts as one of their most popular. If you do a search for “Metallica’s best songs,” “One” would be number one (no pun) on many of the lists you’ll find, and if it’s not #1 it’s certainly close to the top.
The lyrics of the song are pretty dark. It’s about a World War One soldier who has had his limbs blown off, can’t see or speak, and is still alive, praying for someone to kill him. As dark as the subject matter is though, the song is an epic metal/rock staple.

The Chris Cornell Mashup
Chris tells the story in the clip, but we’ll gloss over it here. He was searching for the lyrics to U2’s “One” so he could cover it, and Metallica’s lyrics showed up. Instead of seeking out the correct lyrics, Chris just went with it. Here is the mashup:

Probably my favorite of all the straightforward U2 “One” covers that I listened to before I began to almost hate the song. R.I.P. Johnny, too.
